Computing Intent and Progression

At St John’s our aim is to develop children’s fascination and curiosity by equipping our children with skills to develop their computational thinking and creativity to understand the world. The progression of skills throughout school allows children to build on prior knowledge and allows, as children progress through the curriculum, for them to be able to express themselves in many different media using technology.

We aim to inspire children to think about how their computational skills can be used in the real world. For example, a green screen is used in some filming by the media and programming is how the games and software children use are made.

We aim for our children to leave St John’s being digitally literate by being able to use, express themselves and develop their ideas through information and communication technology. We aim to ensure that the children have begun developing a skillset which would be suitable for employment in later life.

Internet and online safety play an important role within our computing curriculum. We actively engage the children in developing their understanding of how to use the internet safely. We aim to stimulate children’s curiosity but ensure that they are equipped to be safe explorers and users of the online world. We believe children need to be aware of the world around them and be able to make smart decisions. Through our esafety sessions we encouraged children to questions and be aware of aspects of the online world that may not always be actively thinking about.

Christian Values, Cultural Capital and Pupil Premium enhancements

We ensure that digital safety is not only shared and encouraged by the children, but with parents and carers also. We invite parents to meet with our local PCSO to inform them of current online issues and are available for any questions parents and carers may have. Parents and carers are also encouraged to speak to teachers and other adults at school if they have any questions or are unsure of how to keep their children safe online.

We also ensure that our curriculum is aspirational allowing the children to develop work ready skills and identify roles in the real world where these skills with technology can be applied in the future.

Moving forward after restrictions, we hope that we can have a team of Digital Leaders from all year groups who can assist with the organisation of ICT resources in school and support their peers during lessons.
