Spanish

Spanish is taught at St. John’s across Key Stage 2.

Throughout the Key Stage the children will practise all 4 skill areas; listening, speaking, reading and writing, although the main emphasis is on speaking and listening. Pupils will regularly participate in language games, songs and dialogues involving our 2 Spanish teddy bears, Arturo and Josefina.

In Year 3 we learn how to introduce ourselves, say how we are feeling and how old we are, colours, numbers to 20 ,food and drink and talking about our likes and dislikes .

In Year 4 we learn how to say the days and months, we learn about Spanish fiestas. We learn about family and pets and what we like to do in our free time.

4 skill areas: Listening, speaking, reading and writing, although the main emphasis is on speaking and listening.

In Year 5 we learn about places in a town, and can talk about what things there are in our region. We learn how to give and understand directions around a town. We learn about healthy living including sports and healthy diet.

In Year 6 we learn how to describe ourselves and others, both physically and our character. This involves some elements of grammar. We then learn about Spanish eating habits, particularly the café culture. We hold a Spanish café for Year 6 pupils where we sample some Spanish tapas. The pupils take turns to be waiters and customers, and all the ordering has to be done in Spanish.

It is our aim to make Spanish lessons engaging and fun, with a great amount of pupil participation. Hopefully this will foster a lifelong love of language learning.
