Learning about Safeguarding

We ensure that children are taught about safeguarding and how it keeps them safe. The school's curriculum includes opportunities to explicitly teach the children about safeguarding. Areas of the curriculum with particularly strong opportunities for children to develop the skills they need to recognise and stay safe from abuse include PSHE, Relationships Education and Sex Education and the Computing curriculum. Relevant issues are also addressed should they become apparent for particular children or groups of children.

Areas which may be taught, as appropriate, are:

self-esteem, emotional literacy, assertiveness, power, relationship and sex education, online safety, online bullying, sexting, child sexual exploitation (CSE), child criminal exploitation (CCE), sharing nudes and semi-nudes, female genital mutilation (FGM), preventing radicalisation, peer on peer abuse and anti-bullying, consent, healthy and unhealthy / abusive family relationships, knife crime, alcohol and drug safety as well as staying safe around water, road, rail and medicines and chemicals in the home.

Our safeguarding curriculum is carefully designed and mapped across and between all year groups using the computing, PSHE and RSE curricula as well as collective worship time and visits from external agencies, such as the police, as vehicles for delivery. The curriculum is regularly reviewed to reflect current local and contextual issues and makes explicit reference to protected characteristics. As part of this, we recognise that a one size fits all approach may not be appropriate for all children, and a more personalised or contextualised approach for more vulnerable children, victims of abuse and some SEND children may be needed.

To support children's understanding of Safeguarding risks and how to safeguard themselves from abuse, school have created a Child Friendly Safeguarding Policy which can be viewed below. This policy is shared with children at least annually.

We recognise that because of the day to day contact our staff have with the children, they are well placed to observe the outward signs of abuse. It is essential that children recognise when they are at risk and know how to get help when they need it.

The school will therefore:

Establish and maintain an environment where children feel secure, are encouraged to talk, and are listened to.
Ensure children know that there are adults in the school whom they can approach if they are worried.

Our safeguarding and child protection policy cannot be separated from the general ethos of the school which ensures that children are treated with respect and dignity, feel safe and are listened to.
